The new American play sets out to tell the inspirational story behind one of the professional sports most acknowledged figures, Vince Lombardi. While his name is very well known few know the story behind the man. For those who love sports and football the show is destined to be a hit and those who are not the biggest of sports fans are sure to be captivated by the wonderful story.
Vince Lombardi is well known for his coaching work with the Green Bay Packers. Most notably are his 5 league championships between the years 1959 and 1967. He grew up as a young boy in Brooklyn, New York and was one of the first Italian coaches in professional football. His work was based on dedication, respect, effort and hard work. Known to have a sometimes quirky coaching style his strategies along the gridiron were second to none even by today’s standard. The name “Lombardi” still glows as bright today and perhaps more so than ever. One would be hard pressed to find someone who is not familiar or has not heard the name, adding to the appeal for Lombardi Broadway tickets. The Broadway Production
Being presented as Eric Simonson’s Lombardi the Broadway production enjoyed a pre run at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Massachusetts. Eric Simonson is an Academy Award winner most well known for being a Steppenwolf Theater Company member. He has based his script on the best selling book “When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi,” a biographical look at Lombardi’s life written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss. The play is being directed by Thomas Kail whose other Broadway work “In The Heights” is currently running.
Dan Lauria is cast as the lead role playing Lombardi on the Broadway stage. While many may not instantly recognize the name many will recollect the face. Mr. Lauria has relished considerable success in theater, television and film, most notably as Kevin’s father on the hit 1980’s show “The Wonder Years.” He shares many attributes with Lombardi including growing up in New York, playing football and even being an assistant coach for the local high school. Judith Light, well known for her work on “Who’s The Boss,”will be playing the wife Marie Lombardi. The cast of 6 also includes Keith Nobbs, Bill Dawes, Robert Christopher Riley and Chris Sullivan.
Lombardi Broadway tickets will likely find success at the box office. The play is sure to appeal to fans of the coach, football and sports in general. It is an heartening story that should not be dismissed by those who are not sports fans or are unaware of Lombardi’s work and achievements. Previews begins at the Circle In The Square Theatre on September 23, 2010 with an official start date of October 21, 2010.
