Radar Laser Detectors

A friend of mine, a lawyer, was stopped for speeding! Even though he was a lawyer, in a “convey,” and using a radar detector, the patrolman gave him a ticket. He asked the officer why he picked him out of the group and stopped. The patrolman said that he saw my friend’s brake light come on as he was trying to slow down! So if you think you are spotted by a highway patrolman, don’t step on your brake to slow down!

It is not fool proof, but a radar/laser detector may be your best friend helping to spot a speed trap or a moving patrol car. To my knowledge, there is only one company, Rocky Mountain Radar, which will pay your first fine if you get a laser ticket.

What should you look for in purchasing a detector? The first thing is to know what bands they detect. There are X, K, POP, and super wide Ka bands. The next thing is know whether the police units are pulse or instant-on detectors. Check and know that the detector you buy can detect the above. There are also some detectors which make you “invisible” to VG-2/VG-3 detectors. Some detectors scramble all laser signals from police units. Be aware of the claims of the various companies and make sure that they provide you the protection you need when traveling.

Most detectors are portable and can easily be attached to the dash or windshield. Many units have visual and well as audible alerts. Pick one which allows you to select city as well as highway modes. Driving in the city with the detector constantly beeping because of businesses and security systems, etc. is very annoying! Check on the display - make sure that it is readable. A unit should not reflect lights and/or sunlight. There are some very dependable detectors for around $100 -$150. Others cost as much as several hundred dollars. Be sure that you investigate your choice to get your moneys worth.

Radar detectors are legal in all states but Virginia. You need to check the legal status of Laser Detectors in your state.

Japanese-American Singer Hikaru Utada - The One That Got Away

Like other Asian artists, luck wasn’t on Hikaru Utada’s side when she made her US debut in 2004. Her album Exodus did not give her the fame and stardom that most Asian artists dreamt about. After few years, the Japanese-American singer-songwriter returns simply as ‘Utada’, with another English-language album entitled This is the One.

Despite the rapid expansion of South Korean culture internationally - also known as the Hallyu wave - several Korean artists have been equally neglected by Uncle Sam. Kpop stars like Rain, Se7en, and BoA didn’t create as much of a ripple in the States as they did in the Asian area, allegedly due to inefficient marketing strategies.

Where most Koreans have failed, Utada had an advantage. The Jpop queen had better access to promotional machinery by signing with Island Def Jam, the world’s largest record label that handles American rappers LL Cool J, Method Man, and Kanye West.

Promotions-wise, Hikki had some luck in different industries, ranging from music television to gaming. Her singles have won the hearts of many RPG boys through a video game franchise, while the J-drama girls were most familiar with her hit songs in Hana Yori Dango and Last Friends. She has also appeared in ads for a French beauty products chain.

‘Though Utada has gathered a loyal American following, her vocal style in the carrier single ‘Come Back to Me’ sounded much like Mariah. Luckily, the copycat motif didn’t lead to a downtrend like most of her Korean counterparts experienced.

The track ‘This is the One’ fuses radio-friendly urban and R&B beats, while ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ and ‘Me Muero’ showed her penchant for experimentation. The songs were reminiscent of the musical genius displayed in her previous hits like ‘First Love’ and ‘Automatic’.

Lyricism may not be her expertise, but Hikaru is still a well-packaged artist with much potential. Even though she hasn’t joined the electronica-trance bandwagon yet, she already has three titles in the listing of the best-selling Japanese albums of all time.

Unluckily, Utada had to take a break due to health issues. When she gets back to continue promoting her album, let’s keep our fingers crossed that This is the One will set her apart.

Credited as the largest boy band in the world, the Korean pop boy band Super Junior is also a major icon in Asian pop scene. With its bestselling third album Sorry, Sorry, conquered the charts of several Asian countries especially in Thailand, Taipei, China, and Japan.

The boy band, which is nicknamed by fans as SuJu or SJ, earned such popularity with their assorted sleek urban ballads and dance floor hits. Many people appreciate the boy band’s kinds of music because of their swoon-worthy and mature style. Moreover, SJ is also praised for their unrelenting R&B grooves, and of course, their smooth productions.

This world’s largest non-conventional boy band is composed of thirteen amazing members, namely: Donghae, Eunhyuk, Han Geng (a Chinese), Heechul, Kang-in, Kibum, Kyuhyun (the most recently added to the group), Leeteuk, Ryeowook, Shindong, Siwon, Sungmin, and Yesung. The group was formed by SM Entertainment who added atypical members (some apparently effete, some heavyset, and some of slight build) to create a winning formula. They are divided into three sub-units which focus on varied pop genres: Super Junior-T, the first Idol group to execute trot music (the most traditional form of Korean pop music) and has only released one massively triumphant single entitled Rokuko; Super Junior-Happy, a group ingrained in dance-bubblegum pop; and Super Junior-M (for Mandarin), the group that caters to Chinese fans.

As a result of these cross-sectional personalities, the group garnered a total of 55 awards from different award-giving bodies across Asia over the years. The release of their third album continues to cultivate a popularity that crosses geographical regions and language barriers which was demonstrated in their latest performance during the Taiwan’s 20th Golden Melody Awards, an affair that honors the most excellent in the Chinese music scene.

With their masterpiece Sorry, Sorry alone, the track has won over 10 recognitions. It is the most successful single to date. The perfect combination of Asian and Western style and drama and stimulating pop makes one sing ’shawty, shawty, shawty’ under his breath. The songs ‘It’s You/Neorago’, ‘Why I Like You’, ‘Monster’, ‘Reset’, ‘Angela’, ‘Love U More’, ‘Let’s not…’, and ‘Dead at Heart’ will surely linger in the ears, heart and soul of every listener.

The Kpop boy band Super Junior will surely have more super moves and grooves to dish out like the way they sing and dance…like there’s no tomorrow.
