Tom Jones

By: James

There are few musical artists that have managed to stay in the mind of popular culture like Tom Jones. Some of this has to do with his timeless hits such as “She’s a Lady”. Other reasons that Tom Jones has managed to be so popular is that he constantly reinvents his sound. Finally, there is no doubt that his frequent live performances in the US and of course his famous UK concerts have also helped maintain his profile in the public mind. It can be said that there are some artists who are better well known than Tom Jones, but very few can claim to be as popular and enduring as this singer.

Early Life

Tom Jones was born in South Wales and was challenged early in life by a case of tuberculosis. According to his own statement, his time fighting tuberculosis was the worst two years of his life and he was unable to do little but listen to music and draw. Tom Jones Married soon after high school to Melinda Trenchard and a month later his first child was born.

Early Career

Tom Jones began his performing career with a beat group called Tommy Scott and the Senators which became a well known local group. As he began to become more popular, Tom Jones recorded several early singles which led to him becoming well known not only in the UK, but also in the US where he enjoyed several top forty hits in both countries. After some initial success the young singers popularity began to decline and he switched his style to more of a country sound which revitalized his career.

The Las Vegas Years

In the late sixties Tom Jones became one of several stars to begin headlining in Las Vegas. His shows became known for their sexual tension and raw energy. During his time in Vegas, Tom Jones befriended Elvis Presley and the two became close friends. At this time Tom Jones decided that he preferred the more lucrative club acts to cutting new records and it would be quite some time before he released a new album.

Coming back

For a long time Tom Jones seemed destined to be a footnote in music history, however he enjoyed a rather sudden and strong resurgence in the late 80s and early nineties and has since remained at the forefront of the world wide music scene. While Tome Jones has not released an album in a while he still performs live very often and these UK concerts are well known for carrying the same energy as they did when he was a much younger man.

In the end, Tom Jones is sure to remain part of the music world for years to come and even when he dies there is little doubt many people will remember what he offered. His combination of crooning lyrics, sexually charged performances, and memorable tunes is sure to last for years and years to come.

Tips To Get Selected In A Songwriting Contest

By: Sanjay Kapoor

Songwriting contests offer the biggest platform for aspiring songwriters to transform themselves from amateurs to professionals in the world of music. The songwriters achieve popularity, exposure and many music brands approach such artists asking them to write songs for them. If you are a budding songwriter who wants to make it big by participating in the contest, then given below are few tips, which will improve your chances of winning the songwriting contest.

The very first step that you need to keep in mind while writing a song would be to identify your genre and write the song accordingly. Select the theme of the song, which you can relate to. According to musical experts, individuals can write the ultimate song only when they write about people, emotions that resonate with them. This would be a great approach, if you try to convey your feelings through the song. You can also make use of rhymes and choruses in alternating pattern.

Second important songwriting tip would be to use rhythmic portion to convey the story of your song. Punctuate the rhythmic lines of the song with easy chorus, which encloses the message of song. The next step would be to write down the musical backdrop required for the song. Select the kind of instruments which you would like to use in song such as a bass, guitar, piano or drum. However, the instruments you select should go with the words of the song.

If you love songwriting, you need to keep penning down your songs without waiting for results. Take part in a songwriting contest or log on to Internet web sites and locate popular song writing competitions. No Strings Attached

No Strings Attached

By: Movie Guru

The funny can be credited to screenwriter Elizabeth Meriwether, who not only creates lead characters that are likeable, but has surrounded these people with a surprisingly rich supporting cast. There is not token best friend that gets all the lines. There’s actually a posse. Natalie Portman’s Emma and Ashton Kutcher’s Adam are surrounded by friends and co-workers that are very very funny without having to resort to outrageous infantile humor. Heck, they all seemed like they could be any of the inherently funny people that I know in the real world.

Adam and Emma meet cute as teenagers at summer camp where his sheepish moves on Emma fall flat. The run into each other again at a frat party in college, then again a few years later. As always happens in the movies, they are destined to end up in the same state, in the same town, at the same time. So when drunk and depressed Adam calls every phone number in his cell for a booty call, he ends up waking up in Emma’s Los Angeles flat surrounded by her roommates. Emma is now a workaholic doctor, and Adam works as a middling minion in the television business. Emma doesn’t have the time or energy for a real relationship, so she proposes that she and Adam become fuck-buddies. What guy would refuse?

I think it is interesting that there is a string of “no strings attached” sex comedies spilling into the theaters. And they all seemingly have the same twist (which is not much of a twist when they are all the same): In the modern take, it is the guy who falls for the non-committal woman first. But where the similar setup of Love and Other Drugs failed from lack of chemistry between Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, Natalie and Ashton actually make a cute couple. Their quips seem natural, and even though Emma is a bit over-the-top bristly whenever she thinks she is being conned into a relationshippy-type moment, she is still appealing. And who doesn’t like to see Natalie Portman have an occasional potty-mouth moment? That’s right. We all like a smart girl that swears.

No Strings Attached does falter a bit. It struggles with momentum toward the end as it falls into the predictable territory of whether or not these lovers should also be together for realz. Hollywood does always want the perfect kiss at the end. But until then, I was totally enjoying the ride. Along with great supporting turns by Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, and Lake Bell (along with more awkward appearances by Kevin Kline and Cary Elwes), No Strings Attached is funny escapism with a great cast that won’t leave you feeling cheated after your two-hour fling at the movies.

How to Produce Hot Rap Beats

How to Produce Hot Rap Beats

By: James Z. Robinson

When you look on Timbaland, Kanye West or Dr.Dre, you probably think: „how can they produce such fresh beats all the time?“. And it's true, every beat they make has the potential to become a hit. Well, it's really not that hard to make it happen. Everyone can do this with a certain amount of experience. See, the thing is, everyone of these guys has his own style and working structures. It didn't come over night, of course. This is a result of hard work and experience. Not to forget the passion they have when it comes to making music. The truth is, there are many good producers out there who are as talented as the big guys in the business, but the difference is that the famous producers have built a reputation for themselves. So if Timbaland, for example, makes a song, it's guaranteed the song will be played on the radio or television because everyone knows what hits he had and the new song might be as hot as the one he produced before.

Everything really comes down to having your own style, Dr.Dre for example, is known for his westcoast piano sound, you probably heard the song „Still D.R.E.“ he made with Snoop Dogg in 2001. Now he's the first one people think about when they hear „westcoast rap“. Timbaland is famous for his busy drums and percussions, Kanye is known for his busy drums and sampled sounds. The chilly percussion sounds and RnB-like melodies made Pharrell big.

What's your style? If you don't know it, it's time to find out! Experimenting is the key to this. Find out what sounds best to you and look for the responses of people who hear your music. Once you have your style, you're half way through! The rest will be work and experience which isn't as hard as it sounds. If you want to accelerate this process, you might want to spend some money on hardware like an MPC or a good keyboard and a good, high-quality software. That's all. The most hip-hop producers, like Rick Rock for example, work from their home studios and all they need are just those things I mentioned above.

This all might sound as long, hard work to you, but don't be disappointed. Hold on to it and you'll see results faster than you think! With the right hard- and software it will not only be easy, but also really fun for you. And, in the end, that's what it's all about, right?

How To Learn Lead Guitar Lesson

Posted by admin on 24th, 2011

How To Learn Lead Guitar Lesson

By: James Taylor

The lead guitar is normally the guitar part that plays the melody, creating fill passages and guitar solos in the song. Although it is often associated with heavy metal music, it is also present in jazz, blues, pop and a number of other musical genres.

Guitarists, especially beginners, at some point take a lead guitar lesson. This focuses mostly on the essential roles of the lead guitar. One of which is to play the melody lines of the song (melodic playing) and at the same time adorn it as melodic playing enabling the guitarist to play more smoothly as compared to linear playing.

Often lead guitar and rhythm guitar are easily confused with each other, especially when the lead guitarist adds in chords and double-stops to the riffs. It is best to remember that lead guitar is focused on giving the melody, the more single-string guitar playing and solos while the rhythm guitar is mainly characterized by playing chords in patterns.

Some important techniques found in lead guitar lessons are bending, vibrato and slides. These provide the basic means of emphasizing notes and provide greater expression in the melody.

Bending occurs when the guitarist guitar string bends to the side by pushing to the sixth string, or by pulling the first string. The first three strings are normally pushed, while others are normally drawn. Whether the string is pushed or pulled, the note will be raised in pitch.

Vibrato adds feeling and emotion into the notes. It can be done quickly by bending the guitar string back and forth or by exerting pressure parallel to the string to the neck of the guitar, then towards the bridge repeatedly. A helpful hint for the vibrato is that the action should come from the wrist not the fingers.

Slides (or sliding) is one of the simplest but most effective guitar techniques to create a wailing sound on the guitar. There are two types of slides, legato slides and shift. Legato (connected tones) slides are made by picking the first note and slide up or down to the second note. In the shift side, a note is fretted and then the fretting finger slides up or down to another fret.

Another useful lead guitar lesson revolves around the creation of lead guitar lines. This is done by using scales, modes, arpeggios, licks, riffs and fills. It is best to use it together with a variety of other techniques. Learn the blues scale and then the pentatonic scales as these provide a good basis for creating solos, a classical element to the lead guitarist. Arpeggios add depth, and the progression of the solo is often a reflection of the underlying rhythm guitar part. Licks give short improvised solos and while the solo puts the guitarist under the spotlight for a minute or two, riffs and fills supply a series of notes for improvised backing.

With all scales, chords, combinations and variations available, there are thousands of ways to improve your guitar. Imagination and creativity can combine a creative miracle, that's a lead guitar lesson that everyone should learn.

Info like this will help you learn to play lead guitar you'll love and also how to play lead guitar

The Story Behind Hip Hop Drum Beats

Posted by admin on 22nd, 2011

The Story Behind Hip Hop Drum Beats

By: James Z. Robinson

Nowadays hip hop is more than just drum beats, producers also use baselines and melodies in order to make beats. But it all started with the drums, for which hip hop music is known the most. Disc jockeys used to sample and isolate drums from music tracks, mostly from soul and funk music, to make their own, new sound. This was popular in the 80's, when people gathered together on block parties and used to dance on these new drum beats. Later on, the Djs started to scratch, put instrument sounds and vocals on their beats. The result was a new music genre named hip hop.

The hip hop music went through a lot of changes, but the drums are still the heart of this genre. Even big producers still work with drum machines and MPCs, like Kanye West for example. And the result is very good! It's really amazing how something that simple can become and stay so popular and move so many people all around the globe! Now, rap artists come from everywhere, Germany, Russia or Japan…

Some people say hip hop is dead, or is going to die out soon. But I don't think this is true. It has become an integral part of the music industry and it will be that way. Every year new hip hop artists come on the scene, and they are as successful as the artists in every other genre. If you are fascinated about music, like me, and especially about hip hop, you want to be part of this movement!

Either you are a rapper, singer, producer or you want to do it all yourself, there's no better time to start making your own music than now! If you are rapping or singing, you need to practice, so you have your own style, and that's the most important part. Start with freestyling over different instrumental beats, and then, when you're ready to make your own song, look for beat selling pages, let's take „beats4tracks.com“ as an example, here you can listen to samples and buy the instrumentals for an accordingly low price. If you want to produce your own beats, you should look for a good and easy to use beat making software, DUBturbo or Fruity Loops for example. You might want to read my other articles on how to make your own beats.

Just try it out! Get yourself a free demo or software if you're not sure about paying money for a product, there's plenty good software out there. Feel the vibe and let it inspire you, it's really fun!

How Learning Music Can Help With Acting

Posted by admin on 21st, 2011

How Learning Music Can Help With Acting

By: Cleveland Cavs

Learning music can multiply your abilities as an actor. Here are two examples from two A-listers of how they have used music in their career. Followed by showing the technique of being good a music and acting are the same.

Johnny Depp Story

The first career that Johnny Depp wanted to have was to be a musician. Actually, to this day, whenever he can have a guitar around he’ll bring it. Depp states that he uses his approach to music to help him in the craft of acting. He approaches a character just like he approaches learning a song. How this works is the following. In order to learn a song, you have to observe and listen to very carefully over and over again. What in the song corresponds to the movement you are going to use on your finger? What is the rhythm of the song? What is the mood of the song? Does the tempo speed up and slow down? How does the song make me feel? What personal connection do I have to the song? If you ask all of these same questions about the character you are playing you will be in pretty good shape. A large part of acting is character study, looking into yourself and looking into what the character is about. Music can help get you there.

Jennifer Lopez Story

Jennifer Lopez came and spoke to my acting class about 6 years ago. Just a refresher but J-Lo is a triple threat of acting, dance, and singing. She told our class that she would never have made it if it hadn’t been for your combination of all three. She told our class very seriously. “If you have any ounce of acting talent, make sure you make the most of it.” By learning music, you expand the number of roles that you can play. Equally, it gets the creative and artistic juices in your mind flowing. That can only be good for you as an actor.

The music process as an acting tool

The same qualities and techniques that make a good musician also make a good actor. Nobody is a naturally good musician, it is your ability to practice, how good you are at that and how much you do it that make you a quality musician. You can’t be a great musician without practice. Take that lesson into your own personal acting training. There are exercises that you can do by yourself (Strasberg sense memory) and there are exercises that you can do with a partner (Meisner’s repetition exercise). But the most important part about learning how to do these practicing techniques is that you are properly trained in how to do them. You can’t learn it from a book, actually doing it on your own is often dangerous because you are likely to do it wrong. So you have to be properly trained to even know how to practice.

How do you get an Academy Award?

The joke for the person looking how to get to Carnegie Hall is “practice, practice, practice.” That is the same way of how to become a great actor. Natural ability is nothing without the ability, willingness, and discipline to practice.
