Taking Online Guitar Lessons? Know the Parts of Your Guitar
By: Emre Sabuncuoglu
If you are a beginner taking online guitar lessons, there are so many new things to learn. Knowing the parts of your guitar is one topic that you may not learn in some online programs. When you learn these very basic terms, you will be able to converse in a knowledgeable manner with the people in your local music store, and with other guitarists. We will begin at the top of your instrument.
Set your guitar in an upright position with the long, thin part at the top. At the very top of your guitar, you will find the peg head. The peg head holds the tuning devices, called gears, that tighten or loosen the guitar’s strings in order to tune them. Classical guitars generally have slotted peg heads, while rock, jazz and acoustic guitars have solid peg heads. Directly below the peg head is the nut. Usually crafted from bone, the nut holds the strings in the correct positions. The nut’s height determines the strings’ height, as well as the guitar’s action. In general, classical guitarists prefer higher action, while those who play the electric or jazz guitar prefer lower action.
Directly below the nut lies the neck, which is the long, skinny part of the guitar. It holds the fingerboard, onto which frets are installed. Frets are the many tiny bars that run horizontally throughout the entire length of the neck. Pressing your finger on a string at a fret will raise the string’s pitch in order to make different notes. Look at the back of your guitar’s neck. At the very bottom of the neck, right where it joins the larger section of the guitar is a part called the heel. Heels come in an assortment of shapes, some with elaborate decoration. Its purpose, to hide the joint between the neck and the larger section of the guitar, is largely cosmetic.
Now, look at the front of the larger section on your guitar. This part is simply called the face or the top. Around its edges you will find purfling (binding), whose function is simply to hide the joint between the guitars face and its sides. On acoustic guitars, you will discover a round or oval hole, called the soundhole, where the amplified sound comes out of the guitar. Jazz guitars often have f-shaped holes, while most electric guitars have none, since the bulk of the amplification is done electronically. Often, guitar makers decorate the area surrounding the soundhole with an inlay called a rosette. Moving further down, below the soundhole, you will see a horizontal bar containing slots which the strings pass through. This is called a bridge bone. Its purpose is to guide the strings further down, where they are secured to the part called the bridge. Various styles of guitars may have extra or different components, as well as the basic parts mentioned above.
Now that you are familiar with the parts of your guitar, you will be able to discuss guitar terminology with newly discovered confidence. More importantly, knowing the parts of the guitar will help you build more self-assurance as you play.
Guitar Sheet Music - Learn To Play Octaves In 4 Steps
By: Nik Martin
The guitar is a very popular instrument for people to learn but electric guitar sheet music can be quite complicated to master. A lot of instruments are only required to play a single note at a time but a guitar can play up to 6 notes at any one time. It would not be a sensible idea to suggest you learn to read six notes straight away so we are going to look at just reading two notes to start with. The simplest way to start reading two notes with electric guitar sheet music is with octaves.
1 - Find The Octaves
Before we try to play the song you have chosen, you need to look through your guitar sheet music to find two notes that are the same but are stacked on top of one another. These are octaves because they are an octave apart. You should start by putting your first finger (or index finger) of your fretting hand on the lower note of the two. Next you need to place the little finger (or your ring finger) on the top note.
2 - Dampen And Strum
Once you have your fingers in the correct position try strumming the strings with your pick hand. You only want to be hearing the octave strings. If you find that the other strings are ringing you need to dampen them by slightly resting the middle finger of your fretting hand over any unwanted strings. This may be a bit difficult to control but after a some practice you will find the best position that works for you.
3 - Play 2 Sets Of Octaves On The Same Strings
The step you need to take next to help your reading and playing electric guitar sheet music is to try and play two sets of octaves on the same strings. This technique can sometimes be quite tricky as you ideally need to keep your fret hand in a similar shape as you slide from one set of octaves to the next. By practicing a bit you will soon find your own way to play this.
4 - Play 2 Sets Of Octaves On Different Strings
Once you have gotten to grips with playing 2 sets of octaves on the same sets of strings you can then move on to playing 2 octaves in a row on different strings. The key to mastering guitar sheet music when moving from one note to another and one set of strings to another is to try and keep your hand in the same shape and keep it as close to the strings as possible. Learning to play octaves is not easy and you may find yourself not seeming to progress. But keep practicing because suddenly it will happen and you will soon forget that only a short time ago you were struggling to read electric guitar sheet music

Like or dislike love stories, this one is sure to quake you off your feet. The music of I Hate Luv Storys is fresh and is love personified. We know the title is sounds so anti love but trust me the album aint! The album is very buoyant and the love quotient is soaring in every song. Its a citified album which has all the urban culture in all songs and Vishal Shekhar the musical duo of the film has left no stones unturned to the youth culture of today. The music is peppy, new, fresh, pro-love, optimistic and romantic of course. I Hate Luv Storys stars Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan I the lead. With this movie debutante director Punit Malhotra makes his debut in Bollywood. The movie is produced by Karan Johar, Vishal Shekhar is the music duo of I Hate Luv Storys.
The Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor-starrer, helmed by debutant director Punit Malhotra, offers five original soundtracks and three remixes. Music was released on the 25th of May, 2010.
Starting with Jab Mila Tu crooned by Vishal Dadlani has spread over the masses real quick. The song maintains a good tempo to it and is very enjoyable. The lyrics are penned down by Anvita Dutt Guptan. Vishal has sung the song in the way he sang Jaane Kyun from Dostana. The song has got the same upshot and so archetypal Vishal. Vishals singing career has surely take off and is gaining prominence in Bollywood.
Subsequently is “Bin tere”, which is arguably the most soothing poignant track in the album. It commences with English lyrics, followed by Hindi lyrics. Eminent Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali’ has voiced for the song. This beautiful rendition turns it into a soulful and melodious number. The song is really easy on ear and mellow. Even Sunidhi Chauhan plays a cameo in the end. This one is sure to make hoopla. “Bin tere” has two more versions, a remixed version, which has a fast tempo and is a bit groovy, a discotheque version. The other is a reprised version by Shekhar Ravijiani.
Third is the title track from the movie I Hate Luv Storys crooned by Vishal Dadlani. This ones off the hook. A pacey one with usage of hinglish is sure to gain prominence within the young masses.
Well, till this point it was the guys who were crooning all the tracks. But, the next track Bahara will leave you stunned. Its the girl power in the album crooning this one. The team of Sona Mohapatra and Shreya Ghoshal has crooned this folk and contemporary mixed fusion track. This one is a beautiful rendition. This too has another version called Chill, which is sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has a great voice and his voice does justice to the song as he croons it so melodiously that you will have a hard time figuring out which one is better, the chill version or the female version.
Finally, there is “Sadka”, which is again a love ballad by Suraj Jagan and Mahalakshmi Iyer. This is purely a harmonious love song in the album.
On an whole I Hate Luv Storys takes Bollywood to old school romance as it brings some serious romance to the plate. Bollywood hasnt seen much of a romance in near past quiet like this one. Hope IHLS like its music does well in the box office. The music has surely taken off well and is all thumps up!!!
So many people out there get depressed by all sorts of problems. They don’t know how to enjoy life to the fullest, or at least give effort to forget their problems even for a short time.
It is quite easy to have fun, and you can do it in a number of ways. There are of course, sports, parties, and music. Music is seldom the first choice for most people in their attempt to relax themselves.
Researchers unanimously commend music as a form of stress reliever. Believe it or not, it can be the cure for depression and anxiety. Living in a fast-paced environment, you need something to relax your body, soothe your mind and free up your emotions. Music is very pleasant when you are just listening to it; but it can also be a challenging experience when you become part of the performance.
One musical instrument which would really help people feel better is saxophone. Although it might be a little challenging, it is certainly worth the time and effort you’ll give it. Saxophone has one of the most relaxing sounds. That’s why it’s used specially in jazz music. At first, young people won’t feel at ease with the sax, because it’s not that popular with the youth. But if you take time to learn it, you’ll realize it’s an amazing instrument.
Another benefit of learning the guitar for beginners is the increase in confidence that they experience as their skills improve. This is even truer for young children. When children are able to accomplish something, like play a song with the sax, it gives them more confidence and increase their belief in themselves. But children aren’t the only ones who will benefit here, because even adults and teens will feel their newfound confidence.
Just the fact that the beginners are playing the sax shows that it’s fun. Music is good for the soul and it’s truer if you’re the one playing it. Musicians typically enjoy playing their instruments because they love music. It is very fulfilling to be able to play. If you truly enjoy playing then it becomes a source of happiness for you. You might find the lessons very challenging at first but you will soon think less of the hardship and more of the enjoyment.
Playing the sax is exciting. Beginners don’t know what is in store for them when they go to the beginner saxophone lessons. Even if there’s already a detailed beginner saxophone lesson plan, the things they learn are unique for each of them. Everyone has a different interpretation of music, so you never know what’s next.
The saxophone is really a great instrument. You don’t have to force yourself to learn it, because in time, you’ll love beginner saxophone lessons. The sax is not for everyone though. People have different tastes in music, but if you love jazz, most probably you’ll like saxophone. If in the end, you still don’t like the sax, maybe it’s time to choose another road. There are many opportunities out there; don’t limit yourself to only one.
8 Creative Ways to Beat Boredom in Your Guitar Playing
By: Rocky McDaniel
How to avoid boredom practicing the guitar!
There are times in anything youre passionate about that get tedious and lacking inspiration. I myself have been a longtime student of guitar techniques and a huge
fan of many guitar players and styles.
Sometimes its easy to get stuck in a rut and give up because youre not going anywhere.
The speed you are progressing seems to be in reverse or not traceable at all.
There are plenty of things you can do to pep up your playing and keep you going forward.
I made a short list of some of the possibilities.
Always be learning new songs. This will of course add songs to your list, but also keep your mind working.
A great way to do this is to play along with the radio. You have no clue what theyre going to play next and you only have three or four minutes to figure it out.
Go online and find some free lessons and techniques. Most sites will want to charge you, but you can find free ones if you search well.
Learn some uncommon chords and experiment. You can find these in your chord reference book or online too. If you dont have a chord book, go to your local music store and browse one and memorize it on the spot.
Write a song. It wont matter if its silly or dumb, just make it original and practice it with new variations every day until you have it memorized. Instrumental or with vocals, it doesnt matter.
Get some sheet music and practice. Go to the library and pick out some popular music books or check your own bookcase for long forgotten books you played through at one time. Pick out least favorite songs and dig in. This works!
Get a new effects pedal and learn how to use it or dig out older pedals you have lying in a drawer somewhere and experiment with different songs.
Get together with other players and jam. I saved this one for last because it is the best way to clear the cobwebs and force you to think on your feet. If you arent in a band now, advertise for players and start one! Even once a week practices will inspire you to start thinking of new songs and approaches you can use.
These are but a few ideas I could think of at a moments notice and I am sure that you can think up your own. The goal is to stay busy and not let even the idea of boredom creep into your practice schedule. The happier you are as a guitar player, the more it will show in your music, too.

Make Money Playing Guitar  How To Play Guitar For Profit
By: Scott Olewiler
Contrary to popular belief you do not have to be master guitar player to make good money from playing guitar. There are many more important factors that come into play than your guitar playing skill.
When I was 13 I begged my parents for a guitar for Christmas. They were reluctant to take that path; I assume because of the expected ensuing noise, but they went ahead anyway and bought me a guitar and amplifier from JC Penney. Two years later I was playing in bars almost every weekend and making more money in one or two nights than my friends were making all week working the night shift at Burger King.
So at 15 was I a guitar virtuoso? No. I still basically sucked as did the band I was in. I mean we were horrible, yet sold out every night we played. Literally; it was standing room only even on weeknights, and we played almost every bar in a 25 mile radius. It was 1980 when it began and this band still packs them in anytime they play even though they still basically suck.
What was the secret? The leader of this band was a genius at giving people what they wanted. He knew what they wanted and found a way to deliver it. People want to be entertained. If you can entertain people you can make money playing guitar. It is that simple.
At the time Oldies were a big thing, and this band happened to fill a local void by dressing the part, acting crazy on stage, and playing the songs that people wanted to hear. At 15 years old I was signing autographs, fending off advances from older women and making money playing guitar. My first experiences making money playing guitar came from simply giving the audience what they wanted.
A few years later the whole Urban Cowboy thing happened and, I happen to get into another band that was jumping on the country bandwagon. By this time I had spent a lot of time learning how to play guitar and my playing and vocal skills had come along way. I had also learned what it took to be a valuable member of a band even though I still wasnt the best guitar player in the world. Another band followed that one and so on until I finally retired from playing live on New Years Eve 2005.
In addition to all the bands I played in I also did some solo and dual work and never played in a group that wasnt working. During that time I learned the keys to making money playing guitar. The first key is filling the void for your audience. Most guitar players think they should go out there and play what they want to play. That doesnt work if you want to make money playing guitar. People want to hear the songs they like and they want to hear it like the recording, solo and all.
The second key is to only play material you do well. If that means only playing simple songs, then only play simple songs. The audience does not know if a song is difficult, only if it sounded right. You do not get extra credit for trying something that was hard to play. You only lose points for not doing it right. If you know the audience is going to request a particular song and you cant pull it off, find an alternative song by the same artist you can play instead.
The third key is that you must be willing to travel. You dont need to travel across the country to make money playing guitar but you will need to get out of your local town. Heres an interesting fact: most people will pay a band from out of town more money then they will a local band. Theres some weird belief that a band cant be good if theyre local. I dont get it, but I used it to get paid.
Building a fan base is the fourth key and is more important in the beginning than getting more money. Connecting with your audience, talking with them between sets, having good stage banter with the crowd; all of these things lead to more money. You can act as cool as you want, but it doesnt pay as well as being friendly. And that goes double with the person that hired you. You need to make them a fan by showing up on time, turning down if they ask you to and always cleaning up when youre done. If they like you as a person they will have a higher impression of you as a performer and will pay you more. It is easy to raise your price once you build a fan base.
So now you know a little more about how to play guitar and make money doing it. I have done very well financially playing guitar in my lifetime even though most of the local music scene in my town never knew who I even was. Its because I followed these keys that I got paid good money for playing guitar while the local celebrity bands were sometimes paying out of their own pockets to play. Always remember that being the best guitar player in the world does not mean that you will know how to make money doing it.
