Gatti was more skilled than Ward. But hand speed does not necessarily mean good defense.
The fact that both guys were landing at over 70% shows there was very little defense going on.

You are wrong about making fights exciting to please the crowd. Fighters make fights exciting because they lack the defensive skill to not make them exciting. If Arturo Gatti posessed great defensive skill, do you not think he would have used it?
