Korea Welcome

Posted by admin on 30th, 2010

A ramble on the hotel room I am staying at, and some more on the state of the South Korean experience. Music playing in te background is Mellisa Etheridge - :I will never be the same” from the album “Yes I Am” - www.youtube.com Apparently there is legislation in South Korea called ‘real name verification’. I stumbled into this when i tried to post this video… when I first tried to upload the vlog, the message “youtube has voluntarily disabled this functionality on kr.youtube.com because of the Korean real-name verification law” appeared. Evidently there is a way around this (hence why the video is up) but it stikes me as a major blow to free speech in this country if the government has decided that anyone using the internet must provide their real name for posting to global sites! Reminiscent of Denmark’s rather mad laws on internet usage. i suspect the “real name verification” arose from some horrible child pornography abuses, or perhaps, as they succeeded in doing in the UK, some crazy belief that watching ‘brutal’ pornography is more likely to make men want to kidnap and torture women. Yet they let movies like SAW appear in the cinemas? I wonder if the South Korean police will have a go at me if I access thepiratebay, as they are thinking of doing in the U? The real reason is of course a veiled attempt at control. Peace and Love

Koreans have always kept and been proud of their traditional values and culture, yet also been able to accept other culture.
Keep your mind open as they are!

The cup noodle that you were holding says Jjam Ppon (spicy seafood noodle soup) with squid.
      I hope it was good!

Like any other big cities, Seouls became westernized with many named franchises in its downtown.
I am pretty sure there are numerous Starbucks, McDonalds, Berger kings and KFC in Canada or European countries, arent there?
Should I say they are AMERICANIZED since these franchises are from the United States?

I hope you get to spend more time in different parts of South Korea or even different areas within Seoul.
You will have much more fun if you get to meet native people.

Great video Mike. It really made me think. Sometimes it can be very sorrowful to think of the world becoming one big mall.

They done studies after WW2 and from their experiences in Japan they concluded that east asians were more easily westernised than any other “ethnic” group. Thats one of the reasons why they decided to “Globalise” China.
