R&B Soul music is one of the most popular forms of music to ever be developed. There are few people anywhere in the world who couldnt think of an R&B song they like. R&B has spawned countless other forms of music as well including rock and roll. Rhythm and blues is associated with black artists and producers and is known to be an expression of the black experience in America. But, it has grown and developed over the years into a musical form recognized and performed by all races.
In the 1940s and 1950s R&B Soul was ignited and has been popular ever since. Considered a broad category by musicians, R&B itself can mean many different types of music including electric blues, gospel and soul. Over the years different decades have meant different things for R&B. In the 70s rhythm and blues was used as a blanket term for soul and funk for instance. And, since the 1990s rhythm and blues has referred to primarily the pop music iteration of R&B including some forms of rap music.
But throughout all of its changes R&B Soul has always included soul music from artists like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin and the host of other musicians and performers made famous by Motown and other record companies from the 1950s on into the new century. The sounds of soul are the most recognizable musical form in the entertainment world. R&B has survived five decades when other musical genres have disappeared and R&B is one of the most popular musical types all over the world not just in the US. It would be hard not to find R&B in just about any country these days.
R&B Soul is an expression of the black experience in America. It is a secular testifying to the black human condition. It is best described as smooth in style with a very inspiring way of being presented. The music grabs the attention of its listeners and takes them inside of the head of the writer and performer. This is attributed to its gospel roots. R&B Soul music is highly participatory and includes a lot of improvisation when performed live. It is in a word, inspiring. Inspiring is what the artists who produce and perform soul music are looking for. They want their listeners to be part of the music. The success of this ideal can be seen all over the world and watching the effect soul music can have on people is truly amazing. R&B has survived and grown exponentially over the last five decades and continues to be a huge musical franchise sparking its own industry almost within the musical world. It continues in its undying quest to express the feelings of real people and speaks to everyone who listens.
